TAVISTOCK has crossed the broadband finish-line after the magic total of 300 ?clicks? was reached as the Times was about to go to press yesterday.

The Tavistock exchange can now be considered for an upgrade allowing high-speed internet connection., following an article in the Times last week urging more people to register with BT.

At the time of last week?s article, the registration total for Tavistock stood at 254 ? by the end of the week, the total had risen to 271 and it steadily continued to rise until the trigger level was reached.

West Devon Borough Council?s head of IT, Pierre Morel, said it was ?fantastic news? that Tavistock had broken the trigger barrier.

?All this action from everyone has really helped,? he said.

?We sent letters out and talked to local businesses and I am pleased we climbed up so much in the last few weeks.?

Mr Morel said BT would now look into converting those registrations of interest from people in Tavistock into orders and at some stage enabling the upgrade.

Broadband allows much faster access to the internet and allows users to continue to use their telephone when working on-line. BT will only consider an upgrade to the system after 300 registrations of interest have been recorded.
