A SPECIAL ceremony was held in Tavistock's Roman Catholic Church on Remembrance Day.

In the church, Our Lady of the Assumption, there is a unique memorial: an altar and plaque remembering those British and Polish men who were posted to this area and were members of the congregation at St Joseph's Church, Gunnislake.

In memory of their comrades, the altar was ordered and paid for by the Polish servicemen who survived the war. When St Joseph's, Gunnislake, closed, that altar and memorial were moved to Our Lady of the Assumption Church and every year there are prayers for those who died.

The names of the British who died were read out by British ex-serviceman Don McWhinnie and the Polish names by a 15-year-old Polish girl Natasza Kuchauska.

The Polish and Union flags were carried to the altar, along with a candle, which will burn through the month of November.
