A VITAL link in the cycle track from Crowndale Road to Brook Lane in Tavistock was installed last Friday. The 26-metre bridge over the River Tavy was craned into place at 9pm to avoid traffic, and the area was floodlit for the operation. The bridge was made in Huddersfield and travelled down the previous day, stopping overnight at Exeter Services before completing the journey to Tavistock. Graham Cornish, of Devon County Council, said that following 'tidying up and lighting' the track would be open in a few weeks. The whole track has cost £330,000 and Mr Cornish said it was 'a very important link for children from the south of Tavistock', including Bishopsmead. 'At present they have to go along the main road. The people in the houses opposite the bridge are delighted as at present they take their children to school by car because the road is so dangerous, adding to the traffic and fumes, but now they will be able to walk or cycle to school. 'This is what it is all about. It will provide a direct route to the bike sheds,' he said. The track will be part of the larger Drake's Trail, which will run from Tavistock to Plymouth, joining the old railway line near Grenofen tunnel for the final section to Plymouth. This is now one kilometre short of completion.
