Duchy league cup
Morwenstow 1
Bere Alston Utd 3
ANOTHER gritty away performance saw Bere come away from this League Cup tie at Morwenstow with a fine 3-1 win to set up an encounter with near neighbours Tavistock in the next round.
After an even opening 15 minutes Bere took the lead when Chris Bray's effort was parried by the Morwenstow keeper and Dan Follett was on hand to ram home the rebound.
Five minutes later and Bere almost had a second when Jason Clancy headed a Nick Aplin corner against the crossbar and Mike Curtis followed up only to see his goal bound effort blocked on the line.
As the half wore on Bere's passing began to go astray, handing the initiative to Morwenstow, who deservedly drew level in stoppage time when Norman Foster latched onto a long clearance and lobbed the advancing Jack Dixon from the edge of the penalty area.
Bere regained the lead midway through the second half when Chris Bray was rewarded for his persistence as he won possession wide on the right, cut inside and saw his goal bound effort deflected into his own net by the Morwenstow centre half.
Morwenstow responded with Dan Olde hitting the crossbar and seeing a second effort superbly saved by Jack Dixon as they looked to take the tie into extra time.
With ten minutes to go Bere made the game safe when Tom Hammond's low cross was steered home at the near post by Chris Bray and new signing Jason Cordice came close to adding a fourth in the closing stages.
n Bere play the first round of the Devon Premier Cup on Saturday away to Seaton Town, kick-off 2pm.
