TAVISTOCK's popular brass band is hoping 2014 will be its year for an influx of people interested in learning to play a brass instrument.
Stannary Brass Band, together with musical director Peter Jones, hope to recruit more players and encourage more children to learn to play a brass instrument.
No previous experience is required and no charges are made — instruments are available on loan, and children are expected to attend weekly rehearsals at Mount House School during term-time.
The band has coloured lightweight trombones, plus cornets, horns and other instruments.
Beginners of any age are welcome and will learn a new skill with the Stannary Brass training band. Junior players are encouraged to take part in performances to the public as part of their progression towards joining the main band.
Currently the training band consists of players of all ages — they played at a summer concert last year as well as carols at the Christmas Concert and other outdoor carolling events.
Stannary Brass Band does not regularly take part in contests but enjoys a variety of performances and community events throughout the year.
During 2014 Stannary Brass Band will be holding a proms concert, Christmas concert and will be playing at the Wharf for the opening of Tavistock Music Festival. Other concert arrangements are under discussion and the band will be performing at annual events such as Remembrance Day services, and Tavistock Carnival.
