POLICE have issued a description of a man whose partially dismembered and badly burnt body was found on Dartmoor earlier this week.

The man was found in a dried up leat by a dog walker just before 7 o'clock Monday evening, June 18, near Clearbrook.

The dead man is described as between 50 to 60 years of age and about 5 ft 6 in tall. He was stockily-built and hirsute, had short brown hair, greying at the temples, and receding. He was described as having a prominent chin, cleanly-shaven and his feet were described as being quite small compared to the rest of his body.

A police spokesman said they had no idea who he was, where he came from, nor how he got to the place he was found.

'We hope circulating the description will help answer those questions and that someone will perhaps recognise the large chin. Also the age is a little unexpected,' he said.

Dental records are expected to be required to identify the body which was very badly burnt.

A postmortem examination found a number of wounds to the lower part of the back of the head made by a sharp instrument, though the pathologist could not ascertain whether these had been the cause of death.

Police have stated they believe he was killed elsewhere and that his body had been in the leat for less than 48 hours.
