THAT was the verdict after last Sunday's Leafy Lanes charity walks, held in the beautiful West Devon countryside around Lydford.

Organiser Dave Hocking said this year's event, held to raise funds for Derriford Hospital's oncology department, was 'absolutely wonderful'.

'There was a great community feel to it, with lots of friends meeting up, with their dogs, it was a lovely atmosphere.

'We've raised very nearly £2,000 on the day and there are still several hundred pounds to come in, so I should think we are creeping towards the £2,500 mark.'

Nearly 250 people, plus their dogs, stepped out on the three, six or nine mile round walks, starting and finishing at the Fox and Hounds pub at Lydford.

'Lots of people have commented that this year's were the nicest walks to date,' said Dave, who paid tribute to the pub, Sisters Hair and Beauty of Tavistock and the parishes of Bridestowe and Lydford for their support, and the fantastic back-up from the 30 volunteer marshals on the day.

He also thanked the Rev John Davies of Lydford for his moving words at the beginning of the walk, which brought most to tears.

Special guest on the day was cancer sufferer Laura Washer, who has breast cancer, stomach cancer and who is now suffering with a brain tumour.

'She's a very, very special lady,' said Dave.

Funds from the walk will be put towards patient positioning support systems at Derriford Hospital.

'They make a patient much more comfortable while they are having treatment — it's the sort of equipment that will help literally thousands of people,' said Dave, who said how grateful he was to everyone who supported the Leafy Lanes walks.

'I've been very touched by nearly £200 in donations through the post, with some really touching accompanying letters and cards,' he said.
