This is the year to embrace renewable energy

Solar panel installation
Solar panels (Carbon Saving)

With the Energy Bills Support Scheme set to finish at the end of June 2023 (the non-repayable discount supported by the government) most UK homeowners are starting to look for alternative ways to fuel their homes.

Energy regulator, Ofgem, announced in late November that the Energy Price Guarantee price cap is set to rise to an annual level of £4,279 in January 2023.

Thomas Read, company director of Carbon Saving Group comments: ‘We’ve seen an uplift in enquiries and subsequent bookings for solar panels and air source heat pumps. People are generally fed-up with the lack of control they have over their home energy bills.’

For a typical household using direct debit, some customers could see their monthly payments increase by around £67. Money that could be used to contribute towards a new solar system to generate your own clean electricity.

Solar panel installations carried out by MCS certified companies can benefit from the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme earning from surplus electricity generated. Whilst the Boiler Upgrade (BUS) scheme, provides an upfront grant of £5k towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump. Thomas Read concludes: ‘2023 is definitely the year to embrace renewable energy for the home’.’

Walkable Tavistock map
Walkable Tavistock map (Transition Tavistock)

Transition Tavistock connects people looking for ways to tackle climate change and protect nature. The volunteer-run initiatives arise from members’ ideas for ways to make a practical difference at local level.

The most recent is the popular Walkable Tavistock Map, encouraging active travel to help both people and planet. Past projects set up flourishing new organisations, such as Tamar Energy Community and Tavistock Community Gardeners.

Transition Tavistock is among groups showcasing community action for the environment through Tavistock Library’s Great Big Green Week display (10th to 17th June). A list of other local events linked to the week is at www.transitiontavistock.org.uk/gbgwtavi.

Meet the next generation of hot water technology

Aurtek
Aurtek (Aurtek)

According to Citizens Advice, we all face decades of higher energy bills causing financial hardship as incomes get squeezed.

Today’s challenging dilemma, fix or renew the gas/oil boiler or take the plunge and switch to a heat-pump?

Chris Farrell of Aurtek is a leading innovator of improved heating and hot water systems, having pioneered new categories of energy efficiency including GasSaver, that saves 37% of domestic hot water energy from an A-rated condensing gas boiler, now recognised in UK and European regulations.

Chris recognises that after years of promoting efficiency, energy-labels and building-regulations still have the potential to mislead consumers about their future energy costs.

Aurtek’s heating solutions help answer the dilemma by improving efficiency above and beyond that recognised in regulations.

As the head of energy efficiency at Ofgem once said, the problem is that you save too much gas and therefore discredit the statements of the regulatory authorities. These words say much about why families and businesses face financial hardship and how more should be done to lower energy bills.

Aurtek covers Devon and Cornwall providing annual gas/oil boiler servicing, repairs and power-flushing as well as energy consulting and installations for larger properties with under-floor heating and multi-bathroom needs.
