Devon & Exeter League premier division Axminster 1 Okehampton Argyle 2 THIS unexpected victory for Argyle not only gave them a big boost in their fight against relegation, but also put a large dent in the promotion hopes of Axminster Town. With just five games remaining, they are already 11 points behind the leaders, so cannot really afford any further slip-ups. The two teams meet again on Saturday for the return fixture at Okehampton, so with league points crucial to both sides it promises to be an exciting match. Argyle could have made their victory more decisive if they had converted some early chances, especially from striker Steve Williams. On a couple of occasions his speed saw him burst through the Axminster defence, but foiled by the keeper in a one-to-one situation. Steve Kinsey, who scored the all important second goal last week, got Argyle off to a good start when he scored a well taken goal midway through the first half. Argyle increased their lead midway through the second half; this time Steve Williams finished the job in style after once again breaching the static Axminster defence. A late goal from Scott Burrow gave the home side a glimmer of hope, but even though the nerves began to show as Argyle?s defence became a bit jittery, they did manage to play out the remaining minutes and secure a well deserved victory. As mentioned earlier, the two sides meet again at Simmons Park on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
