Devon & Exeter Senior 1 League Okehampton 1st 3 Newtown 1 NEWTOWN really made Argyle battle in this fast flowing entertaining game. With the play being spread by both sides chances were missed at both ends in the early stages. Newtown?s Steve Blatchford opened the scoring on 40 minutes when he hit a speculative shot from fully 40 yards to find the top corner of the Okehampton net. Argyle refused to be beaten and pressed Newtown hard up until the interval with Robert Sandercock, Steve Williams and Adam Mortimore all going close. Okehampton came out in the second half and really dominated play. They were rewarded on 55 minutes when a good move involving Paul Yip and Sandercock opened up the Newtown defence, handing Mortimore a simple tap in to equal the score. Just a few minutes later Mortimore was brought down in the area and James Williams stepped up for the spot kick, only to blaze the ball over the crossbar. Okehampton enjoyed a good period of pressure with Stuart Cann spraying the ball around and finding his colleagues. Another move involving Yip and Sandercock ended with Sandercock finishing well. Argyle refused to sit on this lead and left themselves a bit short at the back on several occasions ? once when Daniel Malcolm had to pull off a good double save to deny Newtown. With Argyle still chasing a third goal Chris Wills found Yip with a good ball. Argyle?s third goal soon came when Yip linked up with Williams who found Mortimore inside the six yard box to hammer home. Okehampton cup final Sunday May 14, 3pm, Chagford v winners of Okehampton and Heavitree.
