South West Peninsula League Division 1 east Axminster 3 Okehampton 1 ARGYLE again played good football and came away with nothing. For long periods of this game they looked the better side, but were unable to find the final pass to unlock the Axminster defence and eventually paid the price. Axminster were shocked with the pace that Argyle started the game, and resorted to the long ball out of defence, just to give themselves a breather. On 22 minutes a harmless looking ball was played into the Argyle area and evaded everyone to find the bottom corner of the net and within five minutes Axminster went two up when a corner was played in from the right hand side and Axminster?s No 5 jumped unchallenged to nod in their second. Okehampton battled hard to try to get back on terms, and were awarded a free kick on 40 minutes. Coach Stuart Cann stepped up to fire the ball in low across the Axminster area, clearing a cluster of players and ending up in the bottom corner of the net. Argyle drew some encouragement from this and started to play football, stretching their opponents but without the end product. Argyle started the second half creating the better chances and were unlucky when Phillip Evans won the ball in the centre of midfield and played in Steve Williams who shot just wide of the target. This was followed by another move involving Robbie Miller spreading the ball wide to Steve Williams and a good early cross was met by Steve Kinsey volleying just wide. Slightly against the run of play Axminster scrambled in a third on 75 minutes following a slight mix up in the Argyle defence. Further chances fell to Argyle and Daniel Johnson was unlucky when he had to watch his long range effort skim off the top of the Axminster crossbar. Mathew Mortimer worked tirelessly down the Argyle left flank, but was unable to reduce the arrears. This result leaves Okehampton second from bottom, desperately needing points before Christmas. This week Argyle are away to top of the league Newton Abbot, 2.15pm kick-off.
