IT was a great day beside the seaside for Tavistock Athletic Club last Saturday as another set of fine performances strengthened the club?s position in the Westward League. The fifth meeting of the league took place in a blustery and damp Paignton and with conditions decidedly soggy underfoot all the athletes were tested in what otherwise was a flat and fast course. Under 13 girls were first off with Laura Aspen finishing 12th and Rebecca Windemer, making her cross country debut, crossing the line in 17th place. The under 13 boys team have been totally consistent all season and have put themselves in a strong position to win a team medal when the season wraps up at the last meeting in March. Tom Lawson led home the procession of Tavistock athletes in 2nd place, only run out of the top spot in the last 50 metres. Jake Rendle, Nick Champion and Matt McNamara-Waddington finished in 7th, 8th and 9th places respectively. Under 15 boys Sam Ericcson and Ross Honey completed their race with 14th and 15th positions. The senior men had a strong field lining up for what proved to be a very competitive race. Jim Coles led the Tavistock contingent home in 8th place, followed by Richard Drage in 14th, Adam Holland, 20th, Chris Champion, 21st, Steve Groombridge, 22nd, Tony Symons, 31st, Chris Eastaugh, 34th, Robin Musgrave, 50th, Allan Herdman, 59th and Pete Bazley, 71st. The most spectacular finish of the day was saved for the last race and in the shake up for top positions was Fiona Dunn who is having a great cross country season in Tavistock colours. Sitting comfortably in 4th for most of the race she mounted her challenge with about 800 metres to go. She soon picked off the lady in 3rd position but just ran out of ground as she hunted down the first two. But that 3rd position puts Fiona in with a medal chance for the series as a whole. Angela Sykes also ran out of her skin and finished strongly in 19th position. The final race will be held at Exmouth on March 20.
