CALLINGTON has acquired a new addition to its famous mural trail — at the Tesco supermarket in Tavistock Road.
An Art Deco-style mural, commissioned by Callington town council and measuring 28ft by 8ft, was erected last week in the car park by mural artist David Whittley.
He said: 'The context behind the mural design is that the council wanted something to catch people's attention, to attract visitors into the town, to enjoy the mural trail and maybe use some of the town's facilities, ie, cafés shops etc.
'The design had to be dynamic, colourful and convey the message that Callington is a vibrant and interesting place to visit. The figures are in a semi Art Deco style, essential to the message.'
The composite mural, paid for by Tesco as part of the community funding given to the town, was painted in acrylics at the Callington pannier market on seven weatherproof panels.
'It's very distinctive,' said Tesco store manager Gary Wills. 'We are delighted to be able to contribute to Callington's artistic heritage.'
Callington portreeve Karen Gold said: 'The new mural is bright, vibrant and alludes cleverly to the very important aspects of the town as it is at the moment.
'It is a bold statement of how we would hope the town to be; busy, bustling with a real sense of life and purpose.
'While everyone is aware of the present economic climate we have strong bodies in the town who are working hard to ensure that Callington comes out of the present downturn with energy. It is not difficult for people to recognise the hard work and commitment that is being put in by the traders' association, town forum and town council. David Whittley has spent some time renovating murals which have been in the town for many years and it is fantastic of a example of his own work in the town.'
