Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Appledore FC 2 Okehampton Argyle 1 OKEHAMPTON were unlucky not to have come away from Appledore with at least a point after getting off to a flying start when Adam Mortimer was brought down and Argyle were awarded a penalty. Philip Evans stepped up to slam home the opener from the spot. Okehampton should have been two goals to the good midway through the first half when again Mortimer beat the offside trap and found the net, only for the linesman to flag him offside. The windy conditions favoured Okehampton in the first half and Appledore struggled to create clear chances, but Argyle were unable to get a second goal that would have give them the cushion they needed for what was to prove a difficult second half. Appledore started the second half playing the ball long over the top of the Argyle defence and time after time it ran through to Argyle's keeper Daniel Malcolm. The home side became very frustrated and this resulted in bookings for Ewan Butler and Carl Holliman for Appledore and Chris Wills and Robbie Miller for Argyle. Appledore levelled on the hour when they won a series of corners and Argyle struggled to clear their lines; no 10 Steve Skinner shot through a crowd of players. Argyle battled hard to keep the game level but could not create any quality balls for the strikeforce of Mortimer and Williams, and it was a sucker punch that won Appledore all three points when their keeper belted the ball upfield, wind assisted and clearing everyone and leaving their left winger Richard Havingham to lob over Daniel Malcolm to make it 2-1. It was a hardworking performance by Argyle and one that deserved at least a point for playing the better football when the conditions allowed. l Argyle are home to Axminster Town on March 29.
