A WEST Devon man, known to many for his work in community and disability football, was 'amazed' to be recognised for all his years of hard work and fundraising by winning the FA Community Award 2015 — presented to him by his hero, Sir Geoff Hurst.

Tavistock's Allen Lewis, who works with the Tavi Specials, is the founder of the popular Son Rise Cup for autism and who is involved in many local football teams, was overwhelmed to hear his name called out at the FA awards event in Kennford last week.

He said: 'I really didn't think I was going to get it.

'It is a fantastic award and so good for Tavistock. It will put my foot in the door to be able to get even more for my teams.

'The award isn't just for me, it will mean so much to the people I help as well. It is a massive honour.'

The award recognises and rewards people across the country that have made a difference to grassroots football in their local community — people who dedicate their time in developing tomorrow's young talent and helping ensure safety and best practice.

The award was presented to Allen by 1966 England World Cup winner and McDonald's director of football, Sir Geoff Hurst.

Allen said: 'To meet Sir Geoff Hurst was amazing. He is the guy that put the World Cup in England's hands in 1966.

'I was trembling when I went up to meet him. To shake his hand was brilliant — he was one of my heroes.'

Winning the regional community award will automatically place Allen in the running for the National Outstanding Comm-unity Award, which is due to be announced later in the year.
