DISCOUNT supermarket company Lidl has put forward a modern, contemporary design for its new store in Tavistock, which features a waveform roof.
Lidl submitted its reserved matters application, including the design and landscaping of the building, to West Devon Borough Council this week, following the approval of outline planning permission in April.
The company recently purchased the application site in Plymouth Road, home to the former McDonalds restaurant, Re-furnish store and the old piano centre. Construction hoarding has been erected and the demolition of the existing structures is due to start shortly.
Lidl said because of the store's highly prominent location — it was the first building seen by people entering the town — a traditional design adopted in many Lidl developments would not be appropriate on this occasion.
During discussions with planning officers it was concluded, said the supermarket company, that a modern, contemporary design would be most suitable. The waveform roof design like that of the Falmouth store, reflecting its marine context, with enhanced glazing units, was favoured above other designs which showed a curved roof.
The reserved matters application will be determined by West Devon Borough Council's planning committee.
