FESTIVE spirit is guaranteed in Okehampton next Thursday, as the town's annual Edwardian Evening swings into action.

The event, organised by the chamber of trade, includes a variety of new attractions as well as the traditional favourites.

Chuckles the Clown will be on hand to entertain the children, along with Santa and his gnomes and elves in the Charter Hall. Also in the town will be stilt walkers and an exhibition of Victorian and Edwardian cycles.

Other popular attractions will be the mayor's carol service, chestnut roasting in the Museum Courtyard, barber shop singers and music from the barrel organ.

The chamber is also co-ordinating an effort by many shopkeepers in the town to let everyone enjoy the lights and do some late-night shopping at the same time.

Many shops and stores are staying open each Friday in December until 7pm.

Ian Bailey, of Okehampton Chamber of Trade, said: 'This late-night shopping experience has come as a direct response from customers who want to enjoy the atmosphere of the lights and trees, while also doing some last-minute gift buying but without having to put up with the push and shove of the cities.

'We have decorations and lights that are renowned countywide and this is a good way of enjoying them — I hope it will become a regular part of Christmas in Okehampton.'
