A FEAST of music will be on offer in Tavistock later this month as the town hosts the first Tavistock Music Live summer festival. With a variety of different music styles played in venues across the town, the organisers hope the event will offer entertainment for everyone. Peter Jones, musical director of Tavistock?s Stannary Brass Band and chairman of Tavistock Music Live, said: ?We have tried to make it so that there is something pretty much for everyone in the community. ?The only element which is missing this time is the rock side, but we are aiming to get something sorted for either July or October, whenever we can get the bands and the venue together. ?The idea of the festival was to make it as reasonable as possible ? I don?t think there?s anything going on that?s really unaffordable.? The festival kicks off on Friday June 17 with Souled Out in concert at Tavistock Town Hall ? a night of classic soul from the 60s and 70s. On Saturday, June 18, the day starts with a samba percussion workshop held at 10am at Tavistock College ? an event open to all ages and abilities. At 11am a South West Brass Ensemble will play in the grounds of St Eustachius Church or in the town hall if the weather is wet. The Dartmoor Duo of Barry Albrighton and Angela Wummum takes to the stage in the town hall at 1pm and at 3pm, the hall plays host to a tea dance with Len Jackman. During the evening, the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra is in concert at Tavistock College, playing a variety of classics, including Elgar?s Enigma Variations, Ravel?s Bolero, Jerusalem and Pomp and Circumstance ? remember to take your Union flag! On Sunday June 19 there will be an African drumming workshop at the Parish Church Centre in Plymouth Road at 10am, which is once again open to all ages and abilities. The Dave Rich Band will be playing at the Tavistock Inn between 1pm and 4pm, performing classic numbers and some of their own compositions. At 2.30pm Okehampton School Big Band will be in concert at the parish church and the final event of the festival is a jazz evening featuring Martin Dale and Friends, held at the Ordulph Arms at 7.30pm. Many of these events are free, with donations welcomed by retiring collection. The full programme of events is available at Tavistock Tourist Information Centre. Performance tickets are either available in advance or on the door ? places at the workshops do need to be booked in advance as they are strictly limited. Tavistock Music Live has received an Awards for All grant to help stage these events, which have also been supported by the Tavistock Charter Group. Tavistock Music Live is a not-for-profit organisation trying to provide more live music around the Tavistock area. Its ultimate aim is to secure funds for a full recording studio at Tavistock College, open to students and the wider community.
