MORE volunteers are being sought for a community service which has been providing transport to the people of Tavistock and outlying villages since 1981. Tavistock Community Bus is looking for people who can spare an hour or two during the week to help passengers on and off the bus at its base in Pixon Lane. More drivers would also be welcome. Over 26 years, the bus service has provided a lifeline to people living in rural locations who have access to very few, if any, public transport links with the towns. In addition to taking people into and out of Tavistock, the bus goes to Exeter, Plymouth, Truro, Paignton and to tourist attractions like Cotehele. Driver and treasurer of the charity Bob Crosbie said they were desperately short of helpers: ?Because the number of volunteers has dropped recently for various reasons, there is more pressure on the ones we have left. ?Instead of working on two or three days a month it has become two or three days a week.? Mr Crosbie said Tavistock Community Bus was ?one, big, happy family? and all the volunteers, like him, were involved because they wanted to give something back to the community. ?At the moment we only have two helpers and we could do with increasing that to six,? he added. ?We would also like more people to drive the 16-seater single decker bus. Anyone who passed their driving test before 1996 would not need another licence to drive the bus.? Young and old can use the bus but it is not for wheelchair users as other services are available. It is part of the free fare scheme for the over 60s who are in possession of a Devonwide or Cornish Key Pass. Anyone who would like to help can call co-founders of the charity Mr and Mrs Baigent on 01822 870433.
