AN innovative idea to bring people back to church is being staged this Sunday (September 30). ?Back to Church? Sunday is a national initiative, which has been adopted by St Eustachius, Tavistock, and St John the Baptist Church, Horrabridge. The Rev Michael Brierley, of St Eustachius, said: ?The interesting thing is this gives an opportunity for people, who had a church connection in the past, to re-connect without feeling guilty about it. This is a real celebration.? Across the country, churches will be observing ?Back to Church? Sunday, and providing a special welcome back to those who used to go. Bishop of Exeter the Rt Rev Michael Langrish will be attending St Eustachius for the day and will talk to members of the church about baptism, while a number of parishioners confirm their faith with others affirming their faith. Horrabridge will be doing its ?Back to Church? Sunday on October 7 in conjunction with the harvest festival. The church is also inviting anyone who has been to church before to join in the celebrations. l The collection box, stolen from St Eustachius Church in February, is back in use. The solid oak chest was carried out by thieves in broad daylight on a Sunday afternoon. It contained money collected from donations, and the sale of books, magazines and candles. After five months, the chest was found by builders after it was dumped in Garden Lane, just a few yards from the church. The back of the chest was removed along with the money, but thieves did not vandalise the rest of the chest, which is believed to be more than 50 years old. Before the chest was put back into place, it was restored by two members of the congregation, Eric Cockings and Ian Morris. Eric restored the woodwork and Ian restored the metal work on the chest. The Rev Michael Brierley said the chest was re-instated at the back of the church in mid-September but with a slight difference ? it was now bolted to the floor.
