DESPITE the snowy weather, the Christmas Day meal and party at Tavistock United Reformed Church was a great success once more. Seventy-six people had planned to join us but 24 were unable to get to the church because of illness or the snow and ice.
We were very grateful to our drivers who bravely collected people from all around the area, even as far as Callington. Several roads were closed by the police as they were unsafe and so we were unable to pick some of our guests up.
Those who came enjoyed a traditional turkey meal followed by Christmas pudding. A few carols and party games were enjoyed before watching the Queen's broadcast. After a cup of tea with Christmas cake, gifts were presented to everyone before they returned home. It was a very happy occasion and all went smoothly without a hitch, thanks to the many people, drawn from all walks of life, who contributed in so many ways.
In addition to the many people who gave up their Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to prepare, cook, serve or transport etc , there were many others and local businesses who contributed financially or in kind to make this day possible. These included: Alliance Disposables SW Ltd, the Co-op, J and S Downing, Edinburgh Woollen Mill, the Horn of Plenty, Morrison's Supermarket, Somerfield Stores, Tavistock Area Support Services, Tavistock Cake Craft, Tavistock Lions Club, Tavistock Walking Group and many other generous private individuals.
Plans are already underway for Christmas Day 2010. Perhaps you might like to join us this year?
The Rev Roger Cornish, Major Carol Lockhart and Captain Penny Sullivan
