MARATHON medics are blazing a continental trail as they compete in the London and Paris marathons next month.

Doctors Annette Roberts and Peter Rodgers from Abbey Surgery in Tavistock are running the marathons in aid of three different charities: Save the Children, Cancer Research UK and Friends of Abbey Surgery.

It is the first marathon either of the doctors have run and they claim it may well be their last!

Dr Roberts gained a place in the London Marathon through her longstanding membership of Tavistock Athletic Club, while Dr Rodgers was dared to do the French run by a friend and applied for a place over the internet.

The pair are very grateful for all support received. Donations can be made in person or by post to the surgery.

Dr Rodgers said: ?We have had tremendous support from the whole community ? my only concern is that I shall get tired and have to stop for a cognac!?

Despite this he is looking forward to the challenge: ?Mine is the first of the two marathons ? I shall be pounding the streets of Paris on April 4.

?The London Marathon is two weeks later on April 18.

?Dr Graham Johnson at Stannary Surgery is running the London marathon as well, and we are holding a competition to see if anyone can correctly guess our finishing times.?

Dr Johnson is competing in aid of MacMillan and St Giles-on-the-Heath Primary School and would welcome any donations and sponsorship.

He said: ?I?ve had lots of support and I?m keeping my fingers crossed that we?ll all complete the courses and raise a substantial sum for these worthwhile causes.?
