TAVY Division Girlguiding took a party of Brownies and Guides to sleep with the sharks at Plymouth's National Marine Aquarium recently. One hundred and eight girls, with their 21 leaders, got to see what happens at night in the underwater world, with a lot of fun packed into one night. The girls joined the NMA's 'sleepover team' led by Tim Nurse, to begin their evening of fun with a twilight tour of the aquarium. This was a rare opportunity to see what the fish get up to at night, especially the Sand Tiger Sharks , giant Pacific Octopus, all the creatures great and small, finishing with 'Snorkel' the loggerhead turtle. There was even some audience participation as the Brownies and a leader helped to demonstrate some animal behaviour. The girls then continued the fun in the Discovery Zone making paper stuffed undersea animals. Sleeping bags were finally set up in front of the Eddystone Reef tank, one of the biggest tanks at the aquarium, where a film was screened for the girls to the accompaniment of a midnight snack. Everyone eventually drifted off to sleep but were up bright and early for breakfast before the public were allowed in the aquarium. The NMA's sleepover team complimented the girls on their behaviour and said they were a credit to Tavistock and would welcome them back anytime. Girlguiding is always looking for new volunteers, so anyone that relishes a challenge and the opportunity to help the community should speak to the Rainbow, Brownie and Guide leaders in the Tavistock and Yelverton area to join in the fun. Contact details for leaders are available from Tavistock Library and the volunteer bureau. l Pictured above are the members of the Tavy Division Girlguiding group at the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.
