PUPILS and staff at a Tavistock area school received an early Christmas present last week when Ofsted inspectors produced a glowing report.

Gulworthy Primary School was described in the report as ?a good school with a significant number of very good features?.

Standards in English, maths and science were found to be ?consistently high?, and improvements made since the last inspection in 1998.

Headteacher Peter Mawer said the positive report was a tribute to the hard work and enthusiasm of staff and children.

?Although inspection is a gruelling experience, it is good to have an outside assessment of the school and how it compares locally and nationally,? he added.

Chairman of governors Simon Howes said: ?Gulworthy School is at the heart of a dispersed rural community and everything we achieve depends on a consistent community effort.

?Everyone associated with the school can rightfully be proud of what we have done and can look forward confidently to maintaining this level of achievement over the years.?

Standards of teaching and leadership at the school were commended in the report, as were the behaviour of the pupils and relations with parents.

However, the inspectors found provision of personal, social and health education (PSHE) and Information Communication Technology (ICT) could be structured better.

There was also room for improvement in the foundation curriculum and accommodation for youngsters in Year R.

The school is aiming to tackle these shortcomings over the next two years.
