THERE was a great result for West Devon?s Heather Fell when she returned to the modern pentathlon international circuit last week. The final world cup event of the season was held in Chianciano, Italy last week. Forty-eight competitors took part, some from as far as Australia. It began with the semi-final, consisting of shooting, fencing, swimming and running, the riding event being in the final only. Two semi-finals of 24 athletes had to fight it out for the first 16 places. Heather qualified for her first senior final comfortably, finishing 14th at the end of the run. Heather got off to an average start in the shoot, improving significantly on her semi-final score, but lack of international experience showed in the fencing. After the first two events she was in 26th position out of the 32 finalists, but with a gutsy swim, the fourth fastest of the day she moved up to 16th place. That meant she was first into the show jumping arena, setting an excellent score for the others to follow with just one pole down, resulting in the third best ride. With this high scoring ride Heather started the running course in 13th place, producing a strong run she moved up one place to finish 12th overall. Due to bone stress in her shins she has not been able to train properly or compete at a high standard for two years, so this was a great comeback. ?I was really pleased to get in the final so to finish 12th in my first international for two years has really boosted my confidence,? she said. Heather is waiting to hear if she is selected for the senior world championships in November, while planning her winter training in order to be ready for the Olympic qualifying competitions next year. Heather is currently based at home near Tavistock, training full time while juggling part-time work. She is searching for any financial help to enable her to reach her goal of competing at the Beijing Olympics. Any offers would be hugely appreciated ? contact Heather on 01822 890251.
