May 17: Devon Ladies' Captains' Golf Society spring meeting and annual dinner was held recently at Yelverton Golf Club, followed by the annual dinner at the nearby Moorland Garden Hotel.

The Captains' Society, as it is fondly known, is open to all the past lady captains of Devon. The society was formed almost 50 years ago and includes past captains from almost every golf club in Devon.

Traditionally the spring meeting launches the start of a lively and varied year, including matches against past captains from other counties.  All events are popular and well supported.

Teresa Holt, past and present lady captain of Yelverton, welcomed 120 ladies to Yelverton prior to the presentations.

The day was enjoyed by all, but really belonged to Penny Hunter, lady captain at Yelverton in 2005. Penny won the much coveted Society Cup fot the highest points in the field. In fast and windy conditions 36 points was a very good score.

Sue Pearman, this year's captain of the society, had already asked Penny to offer the toast to the lady captains after dinner, partly because Penny's mother, the late Phyll Easlick, had been part of the original founding committee of the Devon Ladies' Past Captains Society (at Yelverton) and because Penny was known to be an entertaining speaker. The ladies were not disappointed.

Penny spoke of her mother's friendship with Lorina Norton, the first captain of the society and described those outrageous early days, quoting from Lorina, whom she has recently visited.

Other trophy winners were Kath Copp from East Devon, winning the Marjorie Metherall Trophy and Alison Marsh from The Warren claiming the Chambers   Veterans Salver. Best silver was Rosemary Perry from Tiverton and best bronze was Sue Granville-Smith from Saunton. Fran Ford from Saunton won the salver for higher bronze handicaps.

A great start to the season said Sue Pearman, looking forward to the first match against Somerset at Teign Valley and then the inaugural Bowmaker at Tiverton in July.
