A CRICKET season dominated by the weather was celebrated at Whitchurch. There was a good turn out representing all aspects of the club, with the prizes being award by Peter Sleep representing club sponsors Mansbridge and Balment.

The colts led the way with the principal trophy winners being – Beaver cup for most improved colt Ben Hodge, Crocker Shield for junior clubman Barney Megicks and the Pedrick cup for best colt being presented to Charlie Barriball for the second time.

Presentations were then made to the ladies section and to the TEL side who had an encouraging season with a runners up spot in the cup.

The second XI then led the seniors' part of the evening. The team had started the season promisingly, with a number of good wins. However, the core of the team became the first XI and coupled with a bizarre fixture list and the summer weather, the season fizzled out with the side finishing in mid table.

Although consistency was hard to come by, there were some promising performances on which the side can build.

The awards were handed out to Andy Alford (batting), Ben Hodge (bowling) and Jason Webber (captain's player).

The first XI were competitive throughout the seasons but often did not get the results that their performances deserved.

The decision to invest in the younger players paid dividends with exciting performances from both Barriball, Josh Towl, Rob Bone and Dan Poole, supplemented by a few more experienced players.

The future certainly looks bright for Whitchurch if they can keep this groups of players together.

The awards were handed out to Marc Kerswill (bowler), Billy Barriball (batting) and Martyn Credicott (captains' player).

Having been runner up best bowler in addition to best batsman, Billy Barriball was also all rounder of the year.

The most improved player was Josh Towl who has taken great strides transforming from colts cricket in to one of the first names on the first XI team sheet. Darren Sambells was the fielder of the year.

The award of clubman of the year was presented to Steve Hodge in recognition of his continued contributions to the club and his services over more than 25 years.

Chairman Gavin Hall thanked everyone for their sterling work in a tough season, but especially the officials, tea ladies and sponsors, particularly Mansbridge and Balment, Turners of Roborough and RM Builders.
