Whitchurch seconds vs Ipplepen

WHITCHURCH seconds ended their season with an emphatic win at home to mid-table Ipplepen thirds.

The visitors were asked to bat first on a drying wicket but made a good start. Powell and Heath played their shots and the 50 was up in less than nine overs.

The middle order then stuttered as Barriball (4 for 28) claimed three quick wickets.

Heath continued to torment the home side’s bowling working the ball well into the gaps.

However, when Heath was well caught by Northey off Sambells (3 for 11) in the gully for 52, Ipplepen were in trouble at 88 for 6.

Tamblin (2 for 8) was introduced and struck with his first ball as another miserly spell went for eight runs off seven overs.

Barriball returned to end the innings and Pens were all out for 129.

The Whitchurch reply struggled to get going. Powell (2 for 40) with two early wickets to get the Whitchurch nerves jangling.

Towl and skipper Wallace batted sensibly to see off the openers and then added 54 for the fourth wicket.

That brought the ever reliable Bob Powell to the crease. Together with Wallace they saw Whitchurch nearly to their target. Wallace completed a deserved half century and then hit the winning runs as Whitchurch won by six wickets with 13 overs in hand.

Whitchurch took 20 points from the game but results elsewhere meant they finished the season in third place.
