THERE was a lot of race activity for the Tavistock Wheelers at the weekend. Lee Adams won this Saturday's category four cycling race at Perranporth. It was a true master class performance and he simply rode away from the rest of the peloton. The win also see's Lee gain category 3 status, which is a superb effort. There was also another solid performance from Mark Pearce, who finished in sixth place.
In the category 3/4 race the Tavistock cyclists worked hard at the front, with Will Johnson, Pete Jarman and Gray Roberts all taking turns to attack and force the pace. Gray made a solo break with four laps to go and held on to take sixth place while Will and Pete just missed out in the sprint.
The juniors also raced at Perranporth and Harry Bryant rode his best race ever, aggressive from the start and stayed with the small lead group for several laps before an untimely puncture deprived him of a top eight finish. Rob Waddy, Matt Ambrose and Stanley Barker all showed significant improvement.
The week before the Tavistock Wheelers organised a 25 mile time trial last weekend in blustery conditions on the A386 which started at Mary Tavy. There were 68 entrants including a record 41 riders from the Wheelers. The fastest rider, Sean Childs from RNRMCA, completed the 25 miles in just over 58 minutes — a terrific ride in difficult, windy conditions. Second place went to Gavin MacDougall from the Tavistock Wheelers, who was three minutes slower than the winner. The quickest of the 11 lady riders was Dee Richards from the Tavistock Wheelers.
There was also a large entry from juniors and juveniles. Mid Devon Club's 17 year old Matt Langworthy just pipped 15 year old Charlie Meredith by one second. Third fastest was Peter Jarman from the Tavistock Wheelers.
There was another incredible performance from 67 year-old veteran Tony Farnell who competed the course in just over 1hr 6mins.
The whole event was superbly organised by Martin Williams who praised his army of marshalls, time keepers, tea and cake makers who helped to make this such a successful event.
