THE Youth football season got underway at Tavistock Community FC's revamped Crowndale at the weekend following major pitch works over the summer. The club, through the Crowndale Recreation Association, was awarded more than £50,000 from Sport England's Protection of Playing Fields fund to install drainage into the pitches. The work is part of a programme that will eventually see a total of £75,000 spent on the surface and scheme to ease wear and tear on the pitches. The work over the summer saw the installation of sand banding into the playing surface which has always suffered from waterlogging with last winter's bad weather — meaning that there was little football played at Crowndale for almost three months. The facilities are maintained by a small group of volunteers, but if there is anyone who would like to work as part of a team with the dedicated group and offer their time to support the club in providing opportunities for local people then contact the club. Whatever skills you can offer there will be something you can help with. The club runs teams for all age groups starting at under 9 through the adult male and female teams. If you were inspired by the World Cup and you want to get involved playing then contact the club and they will put you in touch with the team managers and coaches. The new under 9s' coach Simon Hogan — [email protected]">[email protected] — is keen to get more Year 4 players into the club so if there are any budding players out there in this age group contact him or the club by emailing [email protected]">[email protected] With games across all age groups the highlight of the weekend was the U13s' 5-1 victory over Weston Mill. This was young coach Martin Hoar's first game in charge since he took over the team at the end of last season. Having struggled as a group last term his exuberance has been passed on to the players who are having fun. The U12s' performed well to win 4-2 away at Kitto and the U15s' got their campaign off with a good 2-0 win over AC Plymouth.
