TAVISTOCK and Okehampton Squash Clubs played the second of their new annual competition last week where both clubs first and second teams play each other on the same evening for the West Devon Squash Trophy.

The competition is aimed at creating closer ties and hopefully encouraging people in both communities to take an interest in the game and consider getting involved.

This year the first teams played at Okehampton with Okehampton being represented by Alan Searle, Phil Allin, Dan Yeoman, Stuart Lord, and Will Searle, with Andy Howell, Steve Tripp, Will Westlake, Nigel Eadie and Richard Baxter playing for Tavistock.

The match was evenly balanced for the most part with the score at 2-2 after the first four rubbers, but Tavistock won the fifth to take their match 3-2.

The second teams played at Tavistock and were represented by Phil Honey, Simon Powell, Richard Davies, Robin Burdfiled and Karl Meyerhoff, with Shane Vallance, Christopher Elphich, Mike Crowhurst, Yan Whitechurch, and Sue Stanbury playing for Okehampton.

Tavistock came out on top here as well after some good close battles with a 4-1 win to give Tavistock a combined win of 7-3 in games, winning the trophy held by Okehampton from last year.

All matches were played in a good spirit and everyone is already looking forward to the match next year. Both clubs are always looking for new members to get involved with squash and racketball and have both undertaken substantial improvements to their facilities following grants from Sport England who have invested in the long term future of the sport, as part of the Olympics legacy.
