ON Saturday a team of four runners from Tavistock Athletic Club and Bere Alston Trekkers travelled down to Whitsand Bay to participate in the Great British Relay. This is an attempt to break the world record and gain an entry in the Guiness Book of Records for the longest, continuous running relay. Using a specially designed GPS baton The Great British Relay team is looking to cover more than 5,000 miles in 594 stages around the coast of Britain. Some 2,000 plus runners are taking part. The relay began at Scarborough in Yorkshire on June 1 and is expected to end on July 2. The West Devon team of Christine Le Flem, Tracyann Cole and Paul and Samantha Marshall, ran leg 399, from the top of the cliffs near Whitsand Bay Holiday park to Torpoint via Cawsand, Millbrook and St John's — some 8.5 miles. This was in sweltering heat and included some energy sapping hills. The team are to be congratulated on completing the leg. Thanks go to Anne Woodhouse of BATs for her encouragement.
