Fishermans Cup

Plymouth Arguam U16s 7

Okehampton U16s 46

IN what only be considered as harsh playing conditions, Okehampton applied the pressure from the kick off.

Committed forward play resulted in points on the board early on from the visiting side. This was how the game continued and any attack from the Arguam side was nullified apart from an odd blip in the second half. Joe Mawle playing at prop breaking blind from his own 22 metre line and outpacing the opposition winger was an exceptional effort.

The visiting Okehampton side played the conditions better than the opposition; it was never going to be a day of running rugby but pin it in the corners and take your chances.

This was a massive effort by the whole Okehampton team and the forwards stepped up against a larger pack.

Okehampton try scorers were Johnny Harris, Johnny King, Joe Mawle, Liam Pyle and Jack Dickinson.

Exeter Chiefs U13s 5

Tavistock U13s 22

A COLD, miserable and wet day was brightened by a cracking game of junior rugby at the Flowerpot field, Exeter.

The rain and mud made handling difficult for both teams, but this did not stop both sets of backs throwing the ball around with confidence.

Tavistock opened the scoring after seven miinutes after some patient rucking from the pack moving the ball steadily forwards before spinning the ball through the hands for Owen Staples to score out wide.

A second try followed in a similar vein with Luke Edwards benefiting from a great pass from Dan Pett.

Chiefs rallied and scored an almost copycat try with their winger rounding the normally tight defence.

Henry Varndell-Dawes chased down a well placed kick from number eight Noah Berridge to make it 15-5 to the visitors at half time.

The mud, rain and cold made it hard going in the second half and a 'to and fro' game ensued, with Harry Edwards and Edward Tait pressurising Chiefs' every move in midfield, and Harry Edwards using the boot intelligently to relieve any Exeter pressure.

Charlie Meakin, Harry Law and James White put in great defensive work in the Tavistock pack with Mat Davey and James Roisetter adding some forward drive.

The last ten minutes of the game saw the Tavistock pack dominate the set pieces after Chiefs had made it hard for most of the game at scrum time.

Noah Berridge earned himself man of the match as stand in captain and number eight for his work rate, forward play and turnovers at the rucks.

Full back Henry Varndell-Dawes for Tavistock sealed the game after catching a clearing kick on halfway and searing through the chasing Chiefs to dot down under the posts.

Harry Edwards converted to finish the game.

This was a gritty and  determined performance by Tavistock in howling wind and cold rain.

Okehampton U10s 75

Plymstock U10s 10

PLAYING in mud and rain, the Okehampton team, captained by Lachs, showed good handling along the line of players to Adam for the opening try.

Some good demonstrations of rucking were seen and Shortie was tackling well. A pass was swiftly intercepted by Lachs; he was soon halted in his tracks but he went on to score from the scrum.

Okehampton benefited from better communication with joint player of the match Jacob particularly heard. Adam scooped a loose ball to score his second try.

Toby put in some great tackles and Saul ducked and dived his way through for his two tries.

Joint player of the match Alex really threw himself into some tackles today while Dan put in some long strides towards the tryline.

Will and Shea were always there with their dogged determination and hard tackles. There also tries for Lachs, Adam and Will in response to Plymstock's one.

Callum and Lachs opened the second half working together for Oke with Callum rewarded with a try.

There was good passing between Saul and Adam while Josh and Toby put in some great tackles. Adam and Lachs added a try each to the score.

The final phase saw Alex always in the thick of things. Flynn put in a great run, had the tryline in his sights but he put a foot into touch just before reaching the whitewash.

Saul made a good pass to Flynn who off loaded to to Alex to score. Callum charged his way through and passed to Saul for the second of his two tries.

Throughout the match Ed and Jacob always seemed to be in the right place at the right time ready for action.

Towards the end of the match it appeared that Plymstock, who added another try, had found their footing, but the final whistle was blown.

Tavistock U10s 40

Saltash U12s 30

WET and cold conditions greeted the teams for this game. It was Tavistock that started the game and opened the scoring with a try from Eddie.

Despite the conditions both teams adapted well. Tavistock were passing the ball quicker and before contact. The support play of the home team was making it difficult for Saltash to make any impetus. Tavistock scored another try through Eddie and this was added to by a brace from Luke and one for Matthew. The visitors also scored twice before half time.

The second half became a battle of keeping warm by both teams working hard to retain possession.

With some superb rolling mauls from both sides it was an entertaining game to watch. Saltash opened the scoring. The game was quite free flowing and the handling, of what was a slippery rugby ball, exceeded expectations.

Tavistock added to their tally with two more tries from Matthew and one from Luke. Saltash add three more scores but it was a good effort by both teams in providing a fine game.

Tavistock U8s 5 tries

Saltash U8s 4 tries

IN driving rain and freezing temperatures the teams found out properly what winter rugby is all about.

Every player was named player of the week and most improved player because of the atrocious weather. Despite the conditions though, the Tavistock players put their heads down and braved their freezing fingers to take some great tags.

There was some superb defensive work from Edward, Gabriel and Joe H. A super swerving run from Nathan saw Tavistock burst through for their first try.

Matthew and Alastair made a great push through the defence to put Tom through for the second. He scored again shortly afterwards.

Great support play from George M and some lovely passing from Edward put Nathan through and at the end Matthew broke through to score the winning try.

Tavistock U8s 4 tries

Saltash U8s 5 tries

THERE was some good tagging in this game from Tavistock, especially as the conditions made it so hard to take them.

Great work from Dominic and Charlie from the beginning put real pressure on Saltash.

William TY marked his comeback with a storming straight run right through the defence to touch down a great try.

When Saltash restarted William A picked up a dropped ball and hurtled for the line to score Tavistock's second.

Some lovely running from Michael, William S, Lex and Austin kept Saltash on their toes. Charlie made a great break before popping the ball back to Dominic who crossed the line.

Lewis kept up the pressure by racing up the wing to touch down. But in the end all the players — and the parents — were glad to hear the final whistle.
