Torquay U14s 15
Okehampton U14s 31
OKEHAMPTON made the trip to the coast with an unusually reduced
squad but still began the game the stronger.
With some good pick and drives the Oke pack began to pressurise the home sides line. Liam Pyle was the first to score after forcing himself through the defence.
The visitors showed their intent and kept the pressure on the home side.
Torquay probed into the Okehampton half but Niall Leahy reading the attack, intercepted the ball and made a superb run from the ten metre line to score under the posts.
Liam Pyle added a score not long after from a quick tap penalty to bring the score to 19-0 at half time.
The second half started in a similar fashion to the first with Okehampton applying pressure but the home side began to compete and play with abit more conviction. Joe Mawle and then William King thundered through to score two good individual tries.
To Torquay's credit they did not lye down but and the remainder of the half saw them dominate more in most areas. They began to pass the ball out wide and expose the over lap to score three tries in final quarter.
Okehampton can be pleased with the result which was a hard thought match with Johnny Harris and Archie Taylor who both had good games. James Bowden adding the conversions.
Okehampton U13s 50
Torquay U13s 5
OKEHAMPTON finished their season in style with this emphatic eight try victory over a committed, but ultimately outgunned Torquay side.
On a dry but windy morning the Oke boys ran in four tries in each half. The home side started down the slope and took an early lead after a solo chip and chase try from winger Ben McKenna- Smith.
The Oke pack were soon dominating at scrum time, and this superiority gave number eight Greg Daniel the chance to pick up from a five yard scrum and force his way over for the second try. Ben McKenna –Smith converted.
Torquay then had their best spell and briefly reduced the arrears with a well worked try. Oke soon regrouped and further first half scores were plundered through Greg Daniel, and a show and go effort from the dummying Leon Horn. Ben McKenna- Smith converting both tries.
Turning around with a 26-5 lead, Oke stretched further ahead with a well-deserved try for the hard working, and player of the match, Georg Ogbourne who improves with every outing. Ebby Vallance converted.
Next up was the hat trick try for leading scorer Greg Daniel; winger Ben McKenna- Smith then ran in two more tries of his own to bring up his own hat-trick. A conversion from winger Harry brought up the half century and rounded off the campaign in some style.
So the end of a hard and often frustrating season. Oke have shown glimpses of their potential, but lack of numbers has been just one reason behind their under achievement. Hopefully next season will see a larger playing base and improved results.
n THE phrase 'a difficult day in the office' is a fair way of looking at Tavistock U12's games at the Devon Festival on Sunday.
After two tricky games against Sidmouth and Topsham but some good team work lead to a great try by Archie Trevethan, Tavistock went into the shield competition against Plymstock Oaks.
This was a difficult
game which
Tavistock really worked hard for especially in the second half with another try from Archie T, before eventually losing out by three tries to one.
The final game was against Stonehouse which saw Tavistock take the lead with a great try from Jude White but Stonehouse came back with a late try and completed conversion which left Tavistock to lick their wounds.

Tavistock U11s 0
TAVISTOCK U11s travelled to Kingsbridge on Sunday for the Devon RFU county festival and were drawn in a tough group with Collumpton and Teignmouth.
Both group games were evenly matched affairs with some hard tackling in the centre field and end to end attacks with Tavistock using their forwards well. Both Cullompton and Teignmouth used a quick offloading game to get their backs away and exploit the tightened Tavistock defence to score in the corners.
Ben Mckenzie powered through a strong Collumpton defence to score, but a missed conversion left Tavistock 7-5 down at full time.
Tavistock got close twice to the Teignmouth line but strong defence kept them out.

TAVISTOCK took the lead after James Kenyon dived over in the corner; this was followed quickly by an interception by Henry five metres out from the Tavistock line and a sprint the whole length of the pitch to touch down.
Exmouth pulled a try back after some determined forays to make for a hard fought finish with Reuben Coleman making a heroic tackle from a five metre penalty to stop Exmouth in the dying minutes.
Scrummaging honours going to Kiran Warner, Dylan Owen , Ben McKenzie and Jack Baker winning scrums against the head complemented by good possession from lineouts by James Roissetter. Tom Persse worked hard as scrum half to keep Tavistock moving forward with Edward Tait distributing and kicking sensibly at fly half. Some solid defensive tackling from backs Ollie Sampson and Cameron Hart with centres Harry Edwards and Noah Berridge creating pressure out wide and making yards where needed.
This was a great team performance by Tavistock and well deserved silverware after a good season.
