Okehampton U16s 21

Sidmouth U16s 0

OKEHAMPTON started brightly playing down the slope and put the visiting team under pressure. Eventually this told when their blindside flanker broke his binding early to help quell another attack and Lewis Taylor knocked over the resultant penalty.

Oke were soon on the attack again through strong running and good tactical kicking; they went further ahead following powerful forward play down the right; The ball came out to fly-half Palmer who ghosted through a gap to dot down under the posts; Taylor converted.

Sidmouth then showed glimpses of attacking flair but the Oke defence was sound as their tackling and intensity as well as Sidmouth's lack of discipline kept them at bay.

Okehampton then pressed towards the end of the first half and completed it going further ahead when the visiting scrum-half was caught offside at a scrum and Taylor duly obliged with the penalty to make it 13-0 at the break.

The second period became a war of attrition with the majority of play between the two 10-metre lines.

There were times when both sides were able to attack but it was invariable due to errors from the opposition.

The home task was made easier as the visiting fly-half and playmaker was binned following a tip-tackle. Sidmouth's indiscipline gave away a penalty in midfield only to be marched back twice for backchat to put the kick within range, which Taylor accepted with aplomb.

Sidmouth showed some fine attacking play, mainly down the left and were unlucky not to the cross the whitewash. Okehampton completed the scoring five minutes from time when winger Taylor timed his leap to perfection to claim an astute cross field kick from Ollie Francis on the 10-metre line. He broke through two tackles and handed off a would be third before outstripping the cover to score. Unfortunately his own conversion drifted wide.

n This week Okehampton U16s are away to Newton Abbot, kick-off 11am.

Tavistock U15s 68

Devonport Services U15s 10

TAVISTOCK had a good turn out for the first game of the new year.

Although the scoreline in this cup match was one sided the visitors played well throughout the first half with the half-time score being only 10-5 to the home side with a brace of tries from wing Jack Base.

Devonport responded with an excellent try from their inside centre Toby Knowles. Due to injuries both teams agreed to reduce to 14 for the remainder of the game.

The second half saw Charlie Fethany score after five minutes. Tavistock's Will Paul then scored with a superb unaided run from deep within his own half scoring under Services posts with Harry Dunlop converting to make it 22-5. Following a Services attack, Charlie took the dead ball option and from the 22 and set up Jack Base for his second score. Further tries followed in quick succession from Joe Sellars and Seb Cox.

Angus Hogg took the ball on his own 10m line and handing off several Services's players scored with a conversion by Joe Holbrook. Services's Toby Knowles scored a second time to make it 61-10. Angus Hogg scored his second try after a good offload from Charlie before placing the ball over the line allowing a stylish conversion by Alec Hampden-Smith.

Honiton U15s 12

Tavistock U15s 39

TAVISTOCK arrived in Honiton prepared for a hard fought game and what followed did not disappoint.

The visitors displayed good attacking play from the start with Tom Zappala kicking back through and Charlie Fethney picking up and scoring the first try next to the posts with Matt Johnson converting.

Good forward play from Honiton resulted in a try which they converted.

From a Tavistock penalty Alex Lewandowski took the ball and passed to Alec Hampdon-Smith to set up a dynamic ruck and the ball came out to Harvey Curtin, on to Tom and finally to Charlie who sold a dummy and scored another great try, which were unconverted.

Strong supporting team play resulted in the third try with Harvey passing the ball to Charlie, who ran nearly the length of the pitch at pace to score.

A re-invigorated Tavistock started the second half with wing Jack Base putting in a crunching tackle and good hands from Finn Jenkins and Matt allowing Tom to make an incredible run for the visitors' fourth try, which he converted himself.

Time and again Honiton gained and lost possession of the ball through consistent attacking team play by Tavistock including Nick Savage launching himself on the ball. Honiton kept on coming and some good ball handling resulted in their second and final try.

Full back Ollie Wood's move to forward play was rewarded with a superb off load which Charlie F gathered and charged in under the posts for the fifth, unconverted, try.

Honiton showed some good defensive play but the Charlie/Tom combo won through with Alex passing back to Tom for the sixth try. It was Tom who rounded off a fine performance from the team for the visitors' final try and a place in the quarter-finals.

South Molton U13s 14

Okehampton U13s 29

FIELDING a full 15 players for the first time this season, Okehampton made a great start as a good passage of play was finished off in typical bullish style by number eight Greg Daniel.

It was the forceful back rower who also plundered the second try for the visitors, with a pick up and drive from a close range scrum. Both tries were unconverted.

Okehampton carried on where they left off at the start of the second half with all the early pressure.

The next try came when powerful prop Ethan Hoggins crashed over from a short range tap penalty move; centre Leon Horn converting to make it 17-0. Molton were battling gamely though, and soon reduced the arrears with a try from their left winger under the posts to leave things poised at 17-7.

It was Greg Daniel again that put the result beyond doubt though, as he bagged his hat-trick with another pick up from a yard scrum.

The best moment of the match arrived as Oke scored their fifth try. Greg Daniel stole ball at a breakdown, he found the player of the match Nathan Tompkins, making his debut, who carried play forward and offloaded to the supporting Leon Horn who took the ball at pace and cruised in between the uprights. He self-converted and the score was now 29-7

South Molton's left winger grabbed a consolation score with the last play of the match, but it was too little too late.

A much improved showing from the Okes, who reaped the rewards of being able to field a full side in an entertaining match.
