Okehampton U15s 22 Plymstock U15s 10 A near full strength Okes side produced a much improved performance. On a beautiful morning the home side started with pace and purpose and were soon on the offensive. Number eight Greg Daniel opened the scoring with a typically powerful charge from close range. Both sides were moving the ball well and testing each other's defensive lines, and Oke were grateful to centre Harry Cole, who produced two try saving cover tackles in the first period. The visitors levelled things up before the interval though, after an attempted Oke clearance kick was charged down in their own 22. The visitors accepted the gift to bring things back to 5-5 apiece at the interval. Playing with the slope in the second half Oke were soon back on the attack. They extended their lead when Greg Daniel picked up and drove over from a five metre scrum for his second try. Winger Ben Mckenna- Smith added the conversion to make it 12-5 to the home side. The game was now finely balanced, but with ten minutes remaining Oke grabbed their crucial third try. Greg Daniel took a quick tap penalty and fed centre Harry Cole cutting a fine angle. Showing good pace and strength the midfielder crossed mid-way out on the left, for a super score to stretch the home side's advantage. Plymstock refused to lie down and bundled their way over in the top left corner with little time remaining to reduce the deficit to 17-10. Then, as time ticked away Harry Cole crossed for his second try to seal the match after Oke regathered a loose defensive clearance. At 22-10 time was up and, Oke left the field much happier than last week. Okehampton U14s 45 Plymstock U14s 5 UNBEATEN in three games this season Okehampton welcomed visitors Plymstock to Rew Meadow. Oke began with high intensity and positive play from the forwards resulted in an early penalty to the home team. A quick tap enabled Tom Stevens to power through the opposition defence for the first of his three tries. After 10 minutes the free running Oke were rewarded with another penalty in midfield, resulting in another try for Stevens as he powered through the defence to score. Mo Taylor made no mistake to take the margin to 12-0 Okehampton continued to pass and support well. On 20 minutes, turnover ball in their own half was transferred well through hands in midfield to give Jim Finley room on the wing, who accelerated from halfway, cutting through the visitors' defensive line to score under the posts. Taylor chalked up the additional two points. The visitors rallied well and sustained pressure on the Okehampton defence which was met with solid tackling. In the last action of the half gave Tom Stevens powered up field to complete his hat-trick, Taylor slotted the kick and Okes ended the half leading 26-0. The second half began in similar fashion to the first. A tap penalty in midfield with well-worked passing between the forwards resulting in a fine finish by Nathan Tomkins, again Taylor added the bonus points. Even at 33-0 down Plymstock, to their credit, fought back well and were rewarded with a fine try following a good interchange between backs and forwards. The game ebbed and flowed with neither side taking control until, on 50 minutes, a fine move off the tail of the lineout gave Nathan Tomkins the ball; he passed to give Daichi Buddiman space to burst through and finish under the posts. The kick off was fielded cleanly and Nathan Tomkins showed great pace to cut through midfield, one on one with the fullback, to finish the game on a high. Another solid kick from Mo Taylor concluded the game. Tavistock U13s 24 Teignmouth U13s 7 IN this preliminary round of the U13s cup Tavistock received the Teignmouth kick off and one minute later Henry Varndell-Dawes burst through the defence at the half way line and sprinted for the line. Harry Edwards added the conversion. Teignmouth came back with ferocity and attempted to skirt the Tavistock defence with some good backs work. However, Edward Tait and Dan Pett in top tackling form denied them. James Kenyon for Tavistock played well on the wing. The Tavistock pack stepped up with Charlie Meakin and Ben Mckenzie solid and flankers Noah Berridge and Tom Scott pressuring Teignmouth's every ball. Tom Perrse and Harry Edwards controlled at half back. Henry Varndell-Dawes added a second try after the forwards sucked the defence to give Henry the space out wide. In the second half Harry Richardson benefitted from Luke Edwards and new player Lewis Smith combining to give Harry the chance for his now trademark battering ram run for the line. Throughout the game the rucking was intense with both sides hungry for the ball— possession ran back and forth as both sides rucked and counter rucked as if their lives depended on it, not just a place in the next round. Teignmouth constantly tried to break the Tavistock defence but had to wait till the last play of the game when two penalties in quick succession gave them a well earned a try in the corner. Just prior to this Henry Varndell-Dawes finished the Tavistock scoring with a superb chip over the advancing defence, collected the kick and ran in for his hat trick and man of the match . New players Lewis Smith, Sennen Bench, Owen Staples and Noah Mcdermott played with confidence in an all round team performance to be proud of. Tavistock U13s 43 Honiton U13s 7 THE visitors kicked off and the Tavistock pack settled themselves with a couple of rucks before the backs opened up the Honiton defence. Henry Varndell-Dawes put Dan Pett through to score after one minute and the home side went on to dominate possession in both set piece and breakdowns. James Roisseter and Harry Richardson used their height well in the lineouts and the front row of Charlie Meakin, Ben McKenzie and Jaxom Cann ruled the scrums with several wins against the head. Tom Scott kept any Honiton possession to a minimum with his constant pressure tackles from flanker. This platform allowed Henry Varndell-Dawes to benefit from the backs' work to run in a further three tries before half time. Centres Noah McDermott and Edward Tait formed an impenetrable wall of tackles to thwart the Honiton attacks and half backs Tom Persse and Harry Edwards controlled the game with patience and precision. The second half saw Honiton rally and pushed hard against the Tavistock defence and were eventually rewarded with a try after some solid rucking and quick penalties. However, James Kenyon and Tom Scott pushed Tavistock further ahead before Harry Richardson completed the score with a barrelling run through the middle. Feisty Honiton team fought tooth and nail all the way. Tavistock conversions came from Harry Edwards, Henry Varndell-Dawes and Edward Tait. Sennen Bench made an excellent debut in the pack. Okehampton U13s 7 Plymstock U13s 40 ON another balmy Sunday morning, the young Okes welcomed a physically big, well drilled Plymstock side. The visitors dominated the first half, with strong scrummaging and aggressive rucking, creating quick, clean ball for their fly half, who ran the show. Despite creating chances, Olly Northcott and George Cox both showing good pace on the wing, Oke were unable to put points on the board in the first half, with Plymstock putting in some crunching, try saving tackles. The second half saw the young Okes determined to cross the Plymstock line, which they did, following a quick tap and go penalty from Daniel Tomkins, duly converted by James Close, who kicked superbly throughout the match. Credit must go to the Okehampton players for keeping their heads up, showing real teamwork spirit, right to the final whistle. Tom Robins for Oke played well in only his second outing for the club, but ended the game with a broken wrist — the team wish him a speedy recovery.
