Devonport Services U15s 5

Tavistock U15s 27

PLAYING on the artificial surface at Keyham obviously suited Tavistock as they put in one of their best performances of the season against a strong physical Services side.

The visitors were behind by a try inside the opening quarter, after some good work from Devonport at the breakdown. Tavistock showed good composure, and started to build pressure by working through several phases of play and maintaining possession. Their backs looked to make use of a fast running pitch and ran the ball at every opportunity.

Full back Bernie Sadler ran back every kick that came his way and his commitment eventually led to inside centre Ethan Lamerton cutting back inside from the edge of his opponents' 22 metre line and scoring under the posts. George Hillson added the conversion.

Tavistock kept the pressure up and soon scored a second with the versatile Ben Milligan playing at fly half side stepping his way to a fine score in the right hand corner. This sparked a response from Services and the visitors had to defend stoutly for the rest of the half as Services' big ball carriers pounded away at their line. Tavistock held out but this defensive effort led to an infringement from Cameron McKie and he found himself on the wrong side of the referee and was yellow carded.

In the second half George Hillson moved to fly half. Tavistock soon scored through Billy Rowe, who showed good strength with the ball in hand all afternoon.

Ethan Lamerton chased up his own grubber kick and secured possession for James Lewis, who was unlucky not to score after breaking free from deep inside his own half only to be overhauled just 10 metres from the Devonport try line.

George Murran, Steve Kirby and Harry Jeans worked tirelessly for Tavistock, challenging at the rucks and looking to pick and drive or challenge for turn over ball. Flanker Matt Birch earned his just rewards after latching on to a loose lineout ball and crashing through defenders to score Tavistock's fourth. Billy McNicol capped his afternoon's efforts with a driving run from short range, the winger showed strength to force himself through three defenders and rounded off a great rugby match for the Tavistock side.

THERE were nine really close matched games, with Tavistock U7s all working together well as a team in their first away matches this year.

Facing a strong opposition in Ivybridge, there were enough players to field three different teams. They took some excellent tags and defended well against a well drilled Ivybridge side as well as putting together some brilliant passes.
