IN division one of the Okehampton and district Table Tennis league Tavistock have won the league with one more game to go after beating The Mixtures 8-2. Thanks to a fine maximum by Peter Hicks.
Steve Tyler won two for The Mixtures. In the last singles Steve had to work hard against Martin Fowler in the best of five sets. For his second single.
Second placed Okehampton A went down 3-7 against Bridestowe. Nick Jackson won the first for Oke beating Francis Griffiths in straight sets Mark Tancock just beat Barry Vaughan in the next to level at 1-1, winning 11-9 in the fifth. Nick beat Mark Fogerty in five legs to put Okehampton 3-2 ahead. Bridestowe stepped up a gear taking the next four singles and the double for a 7-3 win. Mark Tanock scored his sixth maximum. In their next match against Academy, George Haskell and Tom Pearce both scored maximums in a hard fought match. Four games went to fifth leg deciders and 4 went to 4th legs, with Academy winning the match 8-2.
With Tavistock having won the league, the race is on for second place. Academy have to play Tavistock and North Wyke need at least 8pts for second place.
In division two Okehampton C have secured the league after a hard fought 6-4 win over Milton Abbot A, Richard Rose put Okehampton ahead in the first, just beating Michael Blatchford 11-8 in the fifth leg. Young Tim Westcott levelled 1-1 beating Martin Rose 11-3. Also in the fifth Okehampton then won the next four singles to lead 5-1. Milton fought back taking the next three thanks to Ian Osborne beating Martin. Michael Blatchford doing well to beat Frank Cockburn in four legs. Tim Westcott won the last against Richard Rose for his second singles win. Richard and Frank won the doubles in a hard fought five sets, for the 6-4 win.
Anchorage had a convincing 10-0 win over Milton Abbot B to take them to within six pts of second place Milton Abbot A with Anchorage still to play Horrabridge in the last division two match.
Also in division two Okehampton B played Moretonhampstead. Ken Underhill had to use all his experience against young Harry Bryant in the first game just winning in four sets to put Moreton 1-0 ahead. Graham Adnett beat Keiran Coyle and Brian Skilton to beat Maureen Venton to go 3-0 ahead. Ken took the next against Keiran to put Moreton 4-0 ahead. Harry pulled one back for Okehampton against Graham. Brian beat Maureen in the next, Keiran took Brian to a hard fought 5 leg win against Brian 12-10. In the fifth Ken completed his maximum against Maureen, Harry beat Graham to make the score 6-3 to Moreton. Harry and Keiran won the doubles against Brian and Graham to make it 6-4 to Moretonhampstead.
