TWO highly regarded members of Tavistock Swimming Club have been nominated as finalists in the Exeter Foundation Devon Sports Awards  2018.

Nathaniel Rookes has been nominated for Devon Young Coach of the Year and Ieuan Noakes for Devon Young Volunteer of the Year.

The Devon Sports Awards is an annual event which identifies hard work and achievement across a different number of categories. Now in their 21st year, the awards celebrate the very best of sport right across Devon. The finalists have been invited to a glittering ceremony, which includes a three course dinner and will be hosted by  the BBC’s Jenny Walrond. Three times Round the World Yachtsman and adventurer Conrad Humphries will present the awards.

A delighted Sue Dunstan on behalf of Tavistock Swimming Club said: ‘Nathaniel took the role of development coach with huge infectious enthusiasm, establishing, organising and running sessions for young swimmers that build their self confidence and  skills in the pool and for life in general. He seeks to understand each individual to offer positive encouragement and guidance, building their self esteem.’

Sue added: ‘He leads from the front, continuing to compete and improve. A fantastic role-model.’

The club say Ieuan is a ‘conscientious, thoughtful, and a very reliable helper’ spending most Friday evenings at TSC to assist the coaches and encourage younger club members in their development.

Sue said: ‘He shows great maturity and patience, by providing thoughtful guidance and encouragement to those who may be struggling.

‘As popular men’s captain, Ieuan fulfils his role in a quiet, unassuming, reliable manner. He is prepared to step in to assist the coaches whenever needed, even at very short notice, but is not afraid to ask for their guidance, support and advice.’
