THE beginning  of the summer season at Tavistock Tennis Club got off to a rather wet start  when the Spring Cup had to be abandoned because of heavy rain before the tournament could be finished. 

The first round of tennis in the Plymouth and District League has been completed. Tavistock entering six men's and three ladies teams this season.

Results: Division one - Men's A (Linden Hardisty and Phil Ruse, Max Goodison and Matt Smith) v Mannamead A (away) Draw 4-4. Points 4. Division two: Men's B (Phil Harbottle and Gareth George, Peter Bradley and Tony Du 'Gay) v St. Budeaux B (home) Won 5-4. Points 5. Division three: Men's C (Ray Hinton and Bernard Mowle, Charles Snow and Alex Samborne) v Hill Lane B (away) Draw 5-5. Points 5. Division four: Men's D (Bill Sparkes and Paul Newton, Jeremy Hyde and Benni Evans) v Yelverton (home) Won 6-2. Points 6. Division six: Men's E (John White and Rick Read, Jack Glover and Steve Pearson) v Hill Lane C (away) Lost 3-6. Points 3.

Division six: Men's F (Paul Jackson and John Medland, John Mulley and Steve Fletcher) v Saltash B (away) Lost 2-6. Points 2.

The ladies teams started the season well, winning two league matches and a friendly match in their first round.

Division one: Ladies A (Alice Anstey and Sally Quinlan, Hilary Picton and Amanda Goodison) v Mannamead A (home) Won 6-2. Points 6. Division two: Ladies B (Olga Rogers and Maggie Lilley, Alison West and Sue Parsons) v Plympton (away) Won 7-2. Points 7. Ladies C ( Liz Webb and Lynda Williams, Wendy George and Katie Hines) played a friendly against a combined team from Whitford Road and St Budeaux. Tavistock were winning until it was abandoned due to poor light.

There are a number of new members playing for the teams this year which will make the job of the captains, Phil Harbottle and Amanda Goodison a little easier with such a large pool of players to choose from. Benni Evans, Jack Glover, Steve Pearson, Sally Quinlan, Maggie Lilley and Lynda Williams made a big contribution to this week's matches in their debut appearances.

The American Tournament will take place on Saturday, May 26.
