Yelverton thirds v Werrington fifth

YELVERTON won the toss and chose to bat first on a warm but windy day. The openers made a steady start, with Kenny Sandell making 31 and Jamie Wright 25.

Jon Smith three scored a rapid 22 that included the only six of the innings. Sandy Ralph hit an aggressive 27, with several fours, and Ian Cook contributed 23. Brian Spear finished things off with a quick 22 before being run out as Yelverton thirds closed on 197-6 off 40 overs.

Wickets fell early in Werrington's innings as Ian Dawe opened and bowled a terrific spell— taking four wickets. Alan Munton, opening at the other end, bowled well and took two wickets in successive deliveries. The Werrington opener Adam Bailey looked dangerous until Sandy Ralph took a superb falling catch off the bowling of Ben Spear (3wkts). Matt Smith's bowling was unlucky not to get a wicket.

Werrington's Mike Steel and skipper Nick Wills got them close to the needed 198, until Wills was out lbw to Ben Spear. A superb catch by Jon Smith on the boundary took Yelverton close to victory, but Mike Steel kept his composure and finished on 41 not out as Werrington won by one wicket in what was a very closely fought game. Werrington fifths 18 points, Yelverton thirds 9pts.
