POWER of 10 Squad athletes successfully achieved six medals at the recent Track and Field South West Championships at Exeter on August 17. The Power of 10 Squad is a high performance athletics squad within Tavistock Athletic Club coached by Adam Tofield and Alistair Kinsey, developing athletes to achieve top 100 rankings in the country. Nine athletes from the squad competed at the championships and brought six medals home between them. Dean Smith (U20) and Josh Blake (U17) paid attention to their targets and race tactics by sticking to their race plans to both achieve the silver medal in their 800m races, ensuring the winners had to work hard for their wins. Jenny Milburn returned to competition after a lengthy holiday and battled well to finish 4th in the U13 Girls 800m. Jade Kinsey (U17) and Emma Ryder (U15) had strong competition in their 300m races with both finishing strongly to get bronze medals with a photo finish needed to determine Jade's position. Clarissa Nicholls and Natasha Farrington racing in the U13 Girls 1500m race were put through their paces when the U13 Boys took to the start line and set a blistering pace. The fast start split the pack and made it a tougher race to judge. Clarissa hung on in there finishing strongly to finish 3rd with less than a second separating the top three. Natasha dug in to finish a creditable 5th. In the U17 Women's high jump Aimee-Leigh Clowes had mixed feelings during the day. Struggling, with a slight injury she could not run at full speed, affecting her take off for the jump. Aimee battled through the pain and successfully achieved the bronze medal. Finally in the U17 Women's Triple Jump Amy Bennallick was crowned South West Champion, bringing the gold medal home. Lead coach Adam Tofield said: 'I'm really proud of what the squad has achieved this year. Each year they work harder and get stronger. We sat down as a squad and individually at the start of the season and agreed on our goals for the T&F season. 'When we evaluate the season I think the majority of the squad will be very pleased with how it's gone and with what they have achieved.'
