FOLLOWING Okehampton’s promotion last season back into the South hockey league, game day four of the season was the eagerly anticipated West Devon derby.
Okehampton started brightly as they looked to attack straight from the first pass however it was the visitors who enjoyed greater possession and looked the more likely to score in the early stages.
Tavistock’s Robynne Fenwick opened the scoring with a well placed shot from the top of the D following a clever build up and interchange between Alice Lamb and Erin Shillaw. Tavistock continued to look for a second goal, Lamb senior, Gaspar and Law all looking like they could get on the score sheet for the Reds.
With Tavistock leading 1-0 at half time both sides knew the next goal of the game could be significant.
The visitors kept applying the pressure and were able to win the ball back off Okehampton and keep them penned in ther own half.
After a number of short corner chances centre half Amy Headon pounced on the ball at the back post to put the away side 2-0 up.
Player of the match Hannah Nevin was putting in another trademark performance as the team’s midfield engine and it was she who linked well again with captain Janice Scott to then set Lamb free on the right; she set up Gaspar to complete the scoring for Tavistock.
The visitors were denied a fourth goal after Jenny Pollock’s strike from a penalty corner was judged to have risen above the backboard before crossing the line. The win sees Tavistock move to third in the league, they sit level on points with PMHC.
