UNDETERRED by Storm Callum, half a dozen runners from Tavistock Athletic Club took part in the Great West Run on Sunday.
Running through Exeter city centre streets and country lanes surrounding the city the half marathon always attracts a large field. This year’s race incorporated a county representative match.
Counties in the South West had selected runners to compete for them and Sam Lake from Tavistock Athletic Club represented Devon in the ladies’ event. Sam was the first TAC runner home in 1 hour 27 minutes 13 seconds, ninth lady overall and first veteran 35 to help the Devon ladies win the SW counties challenge.
Next home for TAC was Ian Collacott in 338th in a time of 1.40.37 showing consistent form. Richard Nettelship finished in 2.03.45 (1,190th), Sarah Prior in 2.19.14 (1,704th), Helen Bond 2,115th in 2.44.26 and Wendy Wright 2,116th in 2.44.25 to make it a great day out for the club.
It was an early journey for 17 Tavistock Athletic Club athletes taking part in the Plymouth 10k on Sunday morning with a breakfast time start. The city centre race took place on closed roads and included part of the dual carriageway along the Plym estuary before returning back to the city centre.
Seventeen year old Tom Brew made his debut at the distance and made a very creditable first attempt finishing seventh overall in 35 minutes 10 seconds. Even younger, 16 year-old Brad Stevens also had a good run finishing 13th in 36.07. Charlie Gibbard another 17-year-old ran a solid 40.04.
