TWO of the most popular opens at Tavistock Golf Club, once again, attracted large fields. Ninety two pairs played in the men's veterans' four ball better ball open. Scoring was tight but the Tavistock winning pair Rick Harrison and Keith Hollinshead scored 40 points on countback from Brian Wright and Harvey Leach and Mike Trembeth and David Young. The winning visitors team of John McPherson (Lostwithiel) and Preston Ford (Porthpean) came in with 40pts, second, on 39pts, were John Manicom and Ian Roberts (Boringdon Park) and in third Tom Holland and Chris Coles (Churston) with 38 pts. Visitors nearest the pin on the seventh was Bruce Sobey (St Mellion) and on the 17th, in two, was R Clapp (Lyme Regis); longest drive on the 17th was B Cope, Tehidy Park. Tavistock players nearest the pin on the fourth, Paul Whitby; nearest the pin in two on the 11th Paul Congo; longest Drive on the 15th Bob Small. In the ladies' four ball better ball open event Belinda McSherry, Dawn Phillott, Kayleigh Cann (Tavistock) and Jill Down (Bude) took first place with 86pts. In second place were K Wells, M Bailey, M Godfrey and H Hammond from St Enodoc with 77 and third on 76 Hilary Picton (Tavistock), Margaret Ware, Chris Spier and Karen Whitley from China Fleet. Nearest the pin in two on the 14th was Norma Thewlis; nearest the pin on the seventh was Shirley Persey (Bude and North Devon). There was high scoring in the Harvey Frost mixed foursomes with Matt Boon and Sue Gawman coming in with an excellent 49pts, second was George and Nicky Gawman with 45pts and third, Dave and Peggy Burge on 43pts.
