Marjons ladies seconds 1

Tavistock ladies 2

TAVISTOCK ladies first XI hockey team were drawn away this week to Plymouth based Marjon seconds.

Initially play was disjoined and unsettled as the Tavistock team took time to adapt to the bouncy and fast pitch but gradually the pace started to settle as Tavistock started to link some well-built strings of passes through the midfield. The first penalty corner was awarded to Tavistock but was shot wide of the goal.

Marjon were quick on the counter attack and attempted to move the ball wide, however the Tavistock defence of Pollack, Mills-Hicks, Langsford and Colston were strong to cover the attacks and turn over possession.

The first Tavistock goal came from right wing Becky Lamb, who pulled the ball deep and crossed to Emma White who swiped the ball in on the left post.

The first half saw the away side continue to dominate play with 33 attacks into the Marjon D, the home team only managing to drive the ball into the away team's D on two occasions. However Marjon defence were strong and consistent with their tackles meaning the score remained 1-0 at half time.

The second half saw the pace of the game step up and the determination from the Marjon home side increase. Several penalty corners were awarded to both sides.

Tavistock were next to score with a penalty corner awarded, Payne pushed the ball out to Gasper, who slipped it right to Lamb who passed the ball onto the penalty spot for captain Armstrong to convert and make it 2-0 to Tavistock.

Marjon were soon rewarded with a penalty corner that was capitalised on from a straight strike at the top of the D bringing the score to 2-1.

The dying minutes of the game saw fierce attempts from Marjon to bring the score up to a draw but all attempts failed as the Tavistock girls worked hard to continually tackle and move the ball wide and away from danger. Strong tackles were evident from midfielders Patterson and Armstrong. The final whistle bought relief and celebration for a well-earned win to Tavistock.
