TAVISTOCK Golf Club's annual Captains' Drive-In is always a popular event and this year was no exception when 88 pairs took to the course.
The competition marks the start of the new captain's year and club captain John Harding and lady captain Bridget Luckham were delighted with the turn out.
'Bridget and I were particularly pleased with the buying of 271 "nearest the Drive" lollipop sticks,' said John, 'The sale of the sticks, together with a couple of donations, raised more than £300 towards our charities.'
The winning scores were close with Mike Beveridge and Michael Thrasher in first place with 43pts on count back from Alan Gawman and Kenny MacKenzie, Dean Dickerson and Nigel Roberts and Andy Hicks and partner Mark Stephens.
The best mixed pair with 43 pts were the mother and son team of Marian and Will Stenhouse. The best ladies' pair were Teresa Hughes and Liz Lyndon with 40pts. Bev Ruth and Darren Hall won the nearest the captain's drives with their lollipop sticks.
Cold, wet and windy weather did not make the going easy in the ladies' monthly Stableford. In division one Kayleigh Cann had 34pts, second Dawn Dennis 33pts on count back from Maggie Hillman and Wendy George. First in division two was Carolyn Crawford 34 pts, second Joy Harrison 33 pts, third Pat Hoar 32 pts on count back from Teresa Hughes. Despite the weather Anne Williams had a superb 39pts in division three, second Sue Pratley 33 pts and third Val Jarman 32 pts.
Tom White also had a good score of 40 pts to win the junior Stableford; second was Will Stenhouse 36pts and third with 35 pts was Myles Hodge.
The lady veterans played the qualifying round in the Devon County Lady Veterans' Association club knockout. The winners were Peggy Burge and Joy Tynan who will play RND at Holsworthy in April. Runners-up were Sue Coles and Norma Thewlis.
