TAVISTOCK Town Hall was the sporting place to be on Saturday when Tavistock Amateur Boxing Club played host to clubs from around the country.

There were 13 bouts in all.

The first Tavistock boxer in to the ring was Freddy Owen boxing at 35kg against Leon Mitchell from Camborne ABC in a schools’ bout. It was a lively bout with both boxers showing some developing skills; the action was fast and some good footwork from Owen enabled him to land punches without receiving too many. A particularly good exchange in the second round saw Owen score with a good right hand. At the final bell the Tavistock boxer was declared winner on points.

Leah Howe entered the ring next for Tavistock, competing against the taller Lauryn Hitchcock from Lympstone ABC. Leah did well and showed some good ability but she was put under pressure on several occasions.

On one occasion she received a hard blow to the body which affected her performance. At the end of the round the referee’s decision was to halt the bout in favour of the Lympstone boxer.

Tavistock’s Will Trebilcock entered the ring to face Ollie Lee of Mayflower, a boxer who was taller than his opponent. Lee used a two handed attack and coupled it with holding when close.

At the end of three rounds of effort the judge’s decision was in favour of the Mayflower boxer.

Josh Cannicott entered the ring next, his opponent Daniel Green from King Alfred ABC. Boxing at 64kg this was Josh’s first bout and using a good straight and a powerful right hand Josh showed some good work. Green showed a good straight left and the bout was even.

In the end the decision was given to Tavistock’s Josh Cannicott.

Next to represent Tavistock was Dan Jenkin another debutante who faced the tall Zac Fells of Plympton.

This was always going to be a big task for Jenkin but he gave a very good performance. Both boxers were trying to hit with a powerful right hand and it was inevitable that one would eventually connect.

In the second round Jenkin received a standing eight count and shortly after the bout was stopped when Jenkin received a second.

The final bout of the evening was the eagerly awaited rematch between Pete Jarman and hard hitting Jake Madelin, who had beaten Pete on two previous occasions.

Showing no respect for history Jarman went on the front foot from the first bell and proceeded to dominate the fight. Good straight left and right punches and some swift combinations saw Madelin take a standing eight count in the third round.

The result was a unanimous points win for Pete Jarman.

Tavistock’s Bruce Allen was disappointed not to fight when his opponent did not meet the weight requirement.
