ON Saturday, Tavistock Amateur Boxing Club’s boxers Matt Rush, Will Trebilcock, Josh Chapman and Freddy Owen travelled to Plymouth to take part in Mayflower ABC’s evening event.
Having completed weighed in, it was learnt that Josh Chapman’s bout had been cancelled.
Matt Rush was the first Tavistock boxer in the ring in a skills bout against the southpaw Michael Webber of Torbay. Matt started well and was aggressive throughout the contest with good straight punches and some nice footwork; it was a satisfactory beginning in an unscored but still tough bout.
The first competitive bout for Tavistock was Freddy Owen against Ocean Grant of Torbay. This was a good contest and Freddy showed a lot of skill overcoming determined opposition. Using good lead hand punches and combinations, coupled with excellent footwork, Freddy showed the edge in the majority of the exchanges and was declared the winner by a unanimous points decision.
Will Trebilcock was the next Tavistock boxer in the ring and he faced the taller and heavier Billy Mann from Synwell ABC. Will’s intent was clear from the first bell and he moved forward aggressively with good combinations, outpointing his opponent in the first round. The second round saw Mann coming forward more and Will had to use some evasive techniques against his taller opponent. The third round saw Will find his man with good punches although he was now taking heavy right hands and received a standing eight count. The final bell came and a hugely appreciative crowd gave both boxers a standing ovation.
The decision went in the favour of Synwell’s Billy Mann. Although a disappointing decision, this was Will’s best performance so far and he received many congratulations from the coaches and other boxers.
