South West two
Torbay A 5
Tavistock B 1
THIS game was going to be a difficult fixture for Tavistock with Torbay sitting at the top of the league table.
Playing their usual formation of 4-4-2 the visitors came under immediate pressure, which was admirably dealt with by a solid defence of Glanville, Cull, Monger and Tosdevin, who was making his first appearance of the season.
If anything got through Oxenham in goal did what was necessary, making several quality saves to deny the Torbay attack of any success. Tavistock went 2-0 down before the break - both goals coming from a well worked short corner routine. For the last 10 minutes of the first half the visitors appeared to grow in confidence and created attacks with good shoots going in on goal.
Heads did not go down and the game ebbed and flowed, although Tavistock conceded three more goals in this period; however, the Torbay team seemed to tire during the final phase of the game.
The Tavistock midfield partnership of Bott, Staig (making a welcome return after injury), Gunter-Leece and Tanner worked tirelessly throughout and had several productive phases which opened up the Torbay defence with growing confidence and creative play. A fine move, which started on the half way line, found Staig in a commanding position; he fed Walker the ball and with a strong well placed shot to score for the visitors. This only caused more distress in the Torbay ranks and the Tavistock team finished the stronger of the two teams.
Not for the first time this season the opposition at the end of the game complimented the skill and quality of play from Tavistock’s young ranks, who are a real credit to our club.
